oday, we will spotlight one of our current university scholars, Saruni Mpute. Saruni is pursuing a certificate in Health Records and Information Technology. In Kenya, you can pursue a college or university degree in various ways. There are one to two-year certificate courses, two to three-year diploma courses, and a four-year degree. It is very common to have scholars begin at the certificate level and progress to the 4-year degree. Saruni is in the second year of her certificate course and hopes to be able to upgrade to a diploma upon completion. She is the third born of seven siblings and the only one in her family who has joined college. This has enabled her to stand out amongst her siblings as a role model and has become a trusted voice in the decision-making of her family because they trust the judgment she has developed through her educational experience. In a short interview, Saruni shared more of her story and experiences as a college student.

What are you enjoying about your studies?

I have enjoyed the units where we learn more about our human body, how to interact with different people, and attachments (internships) that have allowed me to gain practical experience. So far I have done two attachments at healthcare centers in Kitengela town.

What has been your favorite part of campus?

Attending lectures and going to the library where I can explore new books and a wide variety of subjects. I enjoy going to the library because it has made the revision for my classes easier with all the books and resources I can interact with.

What are your dreams for the future?

I hope to be employed in a good hospital. I would like to also start an organization that helps those in my community know about health-related issues, provides work opportunities through healthcare, and even open a pharmacy that gives easier access to medicine.

What are you looking forward to at the diploma level?

I am eager to realize more in my field area of study, finding more ease in the units I take, and coming closer to what I have always dreamt of doing.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

I would appreciate my younger self for choosing the path I did because I love the person I am becoming.
